The Supreme Court has rejected a lawsuit filed by Ambrose Owuru, a 2019 presidential candidate, aimed at removing President Bola Tinubu from office and preventing him from carrying out his presidential duties. The Court labeled the lawsuit as “frivolous, irritating, and baseless.”
During the proceedings, Owuru’s lawyer, who was appearing for the first time in the case, admitted to having limited knowledge about it. This prompted Justice John Okoro to question the lawyer’s professional conduct. After a series of unanswered questions related to legal procedure and hierarchy, the Court dismissed the case and cautioned the lawyer against engaging in such frivolous actions in the future.
Owuru, who claims victory in the 2019 election, argued that Tinubu’s inauguration was unlawful due to a pending lawsuit against the 2023 election. However, the Court pointed out that his claim of a 2019 win lacked evidence and was irrelevant to the 2023 election.
In a stern warning, the judge advised the lawyer, who claimed to have been called to the Nigerian Bar in 2018, to refrain from jeopardizing his career with frivolous cases. “Don’t do this type of thing again in your own career. You may not be lucky like today if you do it again,” he said.
This decision by the Supreme Court is consistent with previous rejections of Owuru’s case by both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal. In those instances, the courts also dismissed the suit as baseless and imposed fines on Owuru for abusing court processes.
