Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, is facing criticism for allocating N1.95 billion in the 2024 appropriation bill to purchase new Toyota Prado SUVs for the 24 members of the state House of Assembly. The budget, totaling N521.5 billion, was recently signed into law, with N414.3 billion (79%) allocated for capital expenditure and N107.2 billion (21%) for recurrent expenditure.

The specific allocation of N1,950,000,000 for the “Procurement of Toyota Prado jeep for newly elected House members” has sparked controversy, particularly considering the economic challenges facing the state. Critics have labeled the governor’s decision to buy cars for lawmakers as a “misplacement of priority” for a state reported to be cash-strapped.

According to Sahara Reporters, critics argue that the allocation is unjustifiable at a time when residents of the state, like other Nigerians, are grappling with a surge in the cost of living and hunger. They question the wisdom of prioritizing luxury vehicles for lawmakers over addressing pressing issues affecting the populace.

The move has raised concerns about the government’s spending priorities and accountability, with many calling for a review of the allocation to ensure that public funds are used more judiciously. Some critics have suggested that the funds could be better utilized to improve infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other essential services that directly impact the lives of the people.
