A potential political crisis is brewing in Rivers State as the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the Governor Siminalayi Fubara-led administration of mismanaging N144.28 billion received from the federation account. Chief Tony Okocha, Chairman of the APC caretaker committee in the state, made this accusation during a visit by the party leadership to members of the State House of Assembly in Port Harcourt.

According to Okocha, data obtained from the Federal Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) indicates that the state government received the sum between June 2023 and December 2023. He expressed disappointment that despite this substantial amount, which exceeds the state’s monthly internally generated revenue (IGR) of about ₦10 billion, there has been no visible development in the state.

Okocha warned that the party would not hesitate to take disciplinary action against any member found to be complicit in the alleged mismanagement of state funds. He criticized the use of these funds for what he described as “heavily funded street processions with media presence in support of unnecessary political leanings,” suggesting that certain individuals were benefiting at the expense of the state’s development.

In response, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, thanked the APC leadership for their visit, emphasizing its importance in strengthening the House’s members.

The allegations by the APC against the state government have raised concerns about the management of public funds and the potential impact on governance in Rivers State. The situation is evolving, and both the APC and the state government are likely to face scrutiny as the allegations are investigated further.
