Senate Set to Grill Service Chiefs Over Nigeria’s Deteriorating Security Situation

The Senate has announced its plans to question the service chiefs on Wednesday and Thursday of this week regarding the alarming state of insecurity in Nigeria. Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, Chairman of the Committee on Banking, Insurance, and other Financial Institutions, revealed this decision while addressing journalists on Tuesday.

The planned interaction with the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, which was initially scheduled for Tuesday, has been rescheduled to Friday. This adjustment was made to accommodate the Senate’s questioning of the service chiefs on Wednesday and Thursday.

Additionally, the Senate has extended invitations to members of President Bola Tinubu’s Economic Team to participate in the discussions.

Last week, the Senate passed a resolution summoning the service chiefs to appear before it in plenary to provide explanations on the worsening security situation in the country.

Furthermore, the Committee on Banking had summoned the CBN Governor to appear before it on Tuesday to discuss the state of the nation’s economy and the free flow of the naira.

Senator Abiru explained, “After waiting for close to two hours for the CBN Governor for the planned interface, we have decided to postpone it to Friday this week at 9:00 am prompt. The postponement was necessary because the CBN Governor and other managers of the nation’s economy were engaged in discussions with our colleagues in the House of Representatives, and we were uncertain when their session would end.”

He added, “We considered scheduling the interface for Wednesday or Thursday this week, but the Senate has allocated these days for crucial and constructive engagements with the service chiefs. As a result, we have settled on Friday this week for the interface with the CBN Governor at 9:00 am prompt. Communication regarding this change will be sent to the CBN Governor today (Tuesday) and possibly other government officials managing the economy.”

Earlier in the day, the Senate held a two-hour closed-door session, during which it considered a motion from Senator Ahmad Lawan on the passing of Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim. The Senate observed a minute of silence in his honor and appointed a nine-man delegation, led by Senator Adamu Aliero (PDP Kebbi Central), for a condolence visit to the Governor of Yobe State and the family of the deceased.
