The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has raised concerns about the severe impact of the current harsh economic conditions on ordinary Nigerians. In a statement released by its Secretary-General, Elder Sunday Oibe, the association for the 19 Northern States and Abuja highlighted the unbearable nature of the prevailing economic hardship and escalating security challenges across the country. The organization called on the Federal Government to urgently address these pressing issues.

According to the statement, the increasing cost of foodstuffs, transportation, goods, and services has significantly worsened the plight of many Nigerians. The organization emphasized that these challenges have been further compounded by the escalating insecurity, characterized by rampant killings and kidnappings for ransom. The Christian body expressed sadness over the continued attacks in Plateau State, where over 300 people have been killed, and urged the government to take decisive actions to halt such violence nationwide.

The statement also criticized regional groups such as the Arewa Consultative Forum, the Northern Elders Forum, and some Northern Senators for opposing the government’s plan to relocate some departments in the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria from Abuja to Lagos. The organization viewed this opposition as an unfortunate introduction of ethnic and regional sentiments into a policy aimed at streamlining operations and improving efficiency.

Meanwhile, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar, the leader of Jama’atu Nasril Islam, has also expressed concern over the economic situation. The Sultan urged both the federal and state governments to intervene in the prevailing economic hardship that has led to protests by Nigerians.

Recent protests in Minna, Kano, and Ondo States have highlighted the growing discontent among citizens due to the rising cost of living. In Minna, angry youths and women protested against the government’s perceived inaction in addressing the economic challenges, leading to confrontations with security operatives.
