President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to release approximately 42,000 metric tonnes of grains, including maize, millet, and garri. Additionally, the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria has committed to releasing over 60,000 metric tonnes of rice to the public.
These measures were announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following a meeting of the Presidential Committee on Emergency Food Intervention in Abuja.
The aim is to alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians due to high food prices in the market. These food supplies are expected to last Nigeria for the next few weeks to two months.
In addition to releasing these stocks, the government is also considering the possibility of importing some commodities as an interim measure to meet immediate needs.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security plans to invest significantly in farming to boost production and fully exploit the country’s food potential.
The government urges individuals and groups to refrain from hoarding these products to maximize profits at the expense of ordinary Nigerians. It warns that appropriate measures will be taken if hoarding continues.
The government is committed to ensuring that food remains accessible and affordable to Nigerians. It calls for patriotism and cooperation from all stakeholders to address the current food challenges.
President Tinubu has directed that food be made available to Nigerians at reasonable prices, emphasizing the need for solidarity in facing these emergency situations.
