Dangote Cement Limited’s Ibese plant, spanning 17 communities in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, has been a focal point for controversy due to allegations of neglect and environmental degradation raised by locals.
Despite being a major producer of cement, with an annual output of 12 million metric tons across its four lines, the plant has faced criticism from residents who claim to suffer from hardship, environmental challenges, and lack of basic amenities.
A visit to some of the host communities revealed a dire situation, with many roads in a deplorable state and in urgent need of reconstruction. Residents also allege health hazards from the emission of cement dust, with some attributing respiratory illnesses to the dust.
Locals express frustration at the company’s recruitment practices, citing a lack of representation and opportunities for indigenous people. They accuse Dangote Cement of prioritizing profit over the well-being of the community and exploiting natural resources without adequate benefits for locals.
Environmental concerns have also been raised, with the company accused of committing environmental offenses. While the state government expresses dissatisfaction with the plant’s impact on the environment, Dangote Cement blames the locals for any environmental issues outside the plant premises.
The Minister of State on Environment acknowledges the challenges associated with mining activities but calls for greater cooperation between the company and the government to mitigate negative impacts on the environment.
Efforts to obtain a response from Dangote Group have been unsuccessful, with the company’s Media and Communications Officer promising but failing to provide a response.
