The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to reconsider their proposed nationwide strike for the sake of the country’s well-being.

Speaking at a news conference in Abeokuta, Pedro Obi, NANS national president, appealed to the labour unions to suspend the strike, expressing concerns that it could exacerbate the nation’s economic challenges.

NLC and TUC had issued a 14-day strike notice to the government over the failure to implement agreements reached on October 2, following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

Mr Obi acknowledged the hardships faced by Nigerians, particularly the youth and students, due to the current economic situation. He emphasized that while the labour unions have the right to demand better conditions and go on strike, the potential consequences of the planned strike should be carefully considered.

He urged the unions to explore alternative methods of dialogue and negotiation with the government, highlighting the potential impact of the strike on insecurity, the economy, and the academic progress of students nationwide.

“While we understand the importance of addressing labour issues and advocating for workers’ rights, we believe that a strike, though powerful, could lead to civil unrest and worsen the security and economic situation,” Mr Obi said.

He emphasized the need for constructive dialogue and engagement to achieve mutually beneficial solutions without causing nationwide unrest. He also called on the Federal Government to expedite the implementation of the new minimum wage to alleviate the plight of the people.
