Senate President Urges Stakeholders to Embrace Renewable Energy Opportunities

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has called on stakeholders in the renewable energy sector to seize the opportunities presented by the recently enacted Electricity Act 2023. Speaking at the First Annual Legislative Summit on Renewable Energy in Nigeria, Akpabio emphasized the need for collaboration between the government and private sector to implement the new legislation effectively.
The Electricity Act 2023, along with the Constitution Alteration Act 2023, provides autonomy to state Houses of Assembly to legislate on electricity issues. Akpabio highlighted this as a significant step towards harnessing the potentials of renewable energy and transforming Nigeria’s electricity sector.
Akpabio stressed the importance of renewable energy, not just as a trend, but as a critical component of sustainable development. He emphasized that renewable energy holds the key to economic growth, environmental preservation, and improved access to energy for all Nigerians.
He called for a collective effort from all stakeholders to drive innovation and advancement in the renewable energy sector. Akpabio noted that by leveraging the legal and institutional framework provided by the new legislation, Nigeria can reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate the impact of climate change.
Participants at the summit were urged to stay abreast of global developments in renewable energy and to update Nigeria’s legal and institutional framework accordingly. The Director-General of NILDS, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, highlighted the importance of the summit in refining concepts and principles for enhancing Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.
The summit, which aims to improve the legal and institutional framework for renewable energy in Nigeria, is seen as a significant step towards democratizing and decentralizing the country’s electricity sector. The enactment of the Fifth Constitution Alteration and the Electricity Act 2023 has paved the way for a more sustainable and inclusive energy future for Nigeria.
