The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the World Bank, is targeting $3 billion to fund the expansion of broadband infrastructure in the country. The plan aims to lay an additional 120,000km of fibre optic cables to improve broadband connectivity across Nigeria.

The Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced this at a stakeholders’ engagement event in Abuja themed “Realising a Nigerian Vision of Broadband for All.” He expressed optimism that the funds would be raised within the next two or three years, with the project involving private sector stakeholders and scheduled for completion in the next three years.

Minister Tijani emphasized the importance of investing in the nation’s digital backbone to ensure affordable access to the digital space for all Nigerians. He highlighted the significance of fibre optic cables in enabling internet connectivity and digital services.

Nigeria has currently laid 3,035km of fibre optic cables, but an additional 120,000km is needed to provide quality and efficient internet access and digital services nationwide.

Franz Drees-Gross, the World Bank Regional Director (Infrastructure) for West and Central Africa, outlined the project’s first phase, which involves laying 95,000km of fibre optic cables across Nigeria. This initiative aims to enhance the country’s access to digital services and content.

Drees-Gross commended Nigeria’s vibrant digital ecosystem and expressed the World Bank’s commitment to supporting the country in raising the necessary funds for the project. He mentioned plans to establish a digital national broadband fund and roll out 95,000km of middle-mile cable to bring broadband to more parts of the country.

The project represents a significant step towards improving broadband infrastructure and connectivity in Nigeria, which is crucial for economic growth and digital inclusion.
