Federal Government Declares No Need for Food Imports, Targets Self-Sufficiency

Amidst the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, the federal government has announced its decision not to import food items into the country. This decision was revealed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and state governors.

Speaking after the meeting, Idris stated that the government had initiated a crackdown on food hoarders. He mentioned that security agencies would collaborate with state governments to apprehend hoarders and ensure that food items are made available to Nigerians at reasonable prices.

Idris emphasized that Nigeria has the capacity to feed itself and even become a net exporter of food items to other countries. He described the current challenges as temporary, expressing confidence that the interventions implemented by the president to enhance food security would soon yield positive results.

The minister highlighted Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency on agriculture several months ago, noting that both the federal and state governments have made significant investments in crop production and livestock development.
