President Tinubu Orders Crackdown on Food Hoarders Amidst Rising Prices

President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive to the National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, the State Security Service (SSS), and the Nigeria Police to crack down on food hoarders. This decision was made during a meeting with 36 state governors at the State House, where the president expressed concern over the escalating prices of food items in the country.
Reports from Kano revealed significant hoarding of food in warehouses, prompting Mr. Tinubu to call for immediate action. He instructed the NSA, the Inspector-General of Police, and the director-general of the Department of State Services to coordinate closely and ensure that security agencies inspect warehouses and take appropriate action.
Mr. Tinubu emphasized the need to prevent speculators, hoarders, and rent seekers from undermining efforts to ensure food availability for all Nigerians. He ruled out food importation, instead advocating for support to farmers to increase local food production.
The recent surge in food prices, driven by economic inflation, has sparked protests in several states, including Niger, Kano, Osun, and Lagos. The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar-led Northern Traditional Council, has warned of the growing poverty, hunger, and insecurity, which could lead to a revolt against the government.
A market survey conducted by Peoples Gazette revealed a significant increase in the prices of most food items since Mr. Tinubu assumed office in May 2023. This situation has raised concerns about food security and affordability for many Nigerians.
