NLC Declares Nationwide Protest Over Government’s Failure to Meet Agreements

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a two-day nationwide protest scheduled for Tuesday, 27th, and Wednesday, 28th February 2024. The decision was made following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government over the prevailing hardship in the country.

During an emergency session at the Labour House in Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed regret at the need for such action. He cited the government’s failure to implement agreements reached in October as a major factor.

The NLC highlighted the dire economic situation in Nigeria, characterized by the highest inflation rate in nearly 30 years. This crisis has led to widespread hardship, particularly affecting the welfare of citizens and Nigerian workers.

Ajaero emphasized that the decision to protest was not taken lightly. However, the continuous neglect of citizens’ welfare, coupled with the severe hardships faced by many, left them with no alternative.

One of the key issues contributing to the economic challenges is insecurity, which has significantly impacted agricultural output. This, in turn, has led to food price inflation, further exacerbating the cost of living crisis in the country.

The protest aims to draw attention to these critical issues and to pressure the government to take urgent action to address the concerns of Nigerian workers and citizens. The NLC is calling for the implementation of the agreements reached in October and for measures to alleviate the economic hardships faced by Nigerians.
