DSS Stands Firm Against Protests, Urges Labour to Embrace Dialogue Amid Economic Struggles

The Department of State Services (DSS) has been alerted to plans by certain sections of the organized labor to hold protests on the 27th and 28th of February 2024, across the country to highlight various economic issues. While the DSS acknowledges the right of the labor movement to peaceful protests, it appeals to them to reconsider their plans in the interest of maintaining peace and public order.
The DSS encourages all parties to prioritize dialogue and negotiation instead of actions that could escalate tensions. It is aware that some individuals intend to exploit the protests to incite violence, which would worsen the already challenging socio-economic situation in the country.
Governments at all levels are actively working to improve the economic conditions, and they should be given the opportunity to address the challenges they face. Citizens are urged to remember that peaceful resolutions are more effective than resorting to conflict, as highlighted in the poem “The Casualties” by JP Clark.
Global conflicts serve as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of war on countries, emphasizing the importance of maintaining internal stability and unity. Individuals seeking to exploit divisions in the country are urged to reconsider their actions, as they could jeopardize the peaceful coexistence of Nigerians.
Parents and guardians are advised to guide their children and wards away from actions that could endanger public safety and harmony. Furthermore, all sectors, including political parties, religious and traditional institutions, civil society, and non-governmental bodies, are called upon to reject violence and demonstrate leadership during these challenging times.
The DSS emphasizes its opposition to violence as a means of addressing current challenges, whether economic, political, or otherwise. It pledges to collaborate with other security and law enforcement agencies to ensure lasting peace in the country.
