Senate Urges FG to Maintain Electricity Subsidy Amid Hardship

The Nigerian Senate has passed a resolution calling on the federal government to continue the electricity subsidy, citing the current hardships faced by the populace. The decision came after Senator Aminu Iya Abbas (PDP), representing Adamawa Central, sponsored a motion during plenary, which was approved by the upper chambers.

The motion highlights the importance of maintaining the electricity subsidy in light of the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerians. The federal government had recently expressed difficulties in sustaining the subsidy, with Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu noting the need to transition to a cost-effective tariff model.

Adelabu also pointed out the significant debts owed by the country to electricity-generating companies and gas suppliers. The debate over removing the subsidy remains contentious, with stakeholders voicing their concerns about the economic implications and the welfare of the people.

The resolution passed by the Senate reflects the sentiment that preserving the electricity subsidy is crucial for alleviating the current hardships faced by Nigerians. The federal government’s challenges in maintaining the subsidy underscore the complexities of the issue and the need for careful consideration of the best way forward.
