Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State recently addressed journalists, revealing a series of initiatives aimed at easing the economic burden faced by residents. These measures include a revised work schedule for civil servants, reduced public transportation costs, and comprehensive food distribution plans.

Under the new work schedule, civil servants from levels 1 to 14 will now work a maximum of three days a week, while those in higher positions (levels 15 to 17) will work four days. This adjustment aims to reduce congestion on roads and ease the economic pressure on citizens.

In the education sector, schools will continue to operate five days a week, with additional transport support provided for teachers. The governor also assured timely payment of pensions to retired civil servants, with retirees expected to receive their checks within a month of retirement.

To further alleviate financial strain, there will be a 25% reduction in all public transportation costs across BRT, trains, and ferry services. Additionally, a comprehensive food distribution plan will see the state distributing combo packs of essential items to 300,000 households and providing free meals to 1,000-1,500 individuals daily for 30-60 days.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also announced free child delivery across all 31 general hospitals for the next three months, as well as free health checks and prescribed drugs across all six health districts for two days weekly.

In a bid to enhance security, the governor expressed support for the creation of state police, stating that the state can deploy 10,000 personnel immediately upon legal approval by the federal government. He highlighted the existing Neighborhood Watch and plans to recruit an additional 4,000 personnel for this purpose.

These measures are part of the state government’s efforts to provide immediate relief to residents facing economic challenges amidst the prevailing hardship in the country.
