Former Kwara Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed Granted Bail in N10bn Diversion Case

Former Kwara State Governor, AbdulFatah Ahmed, has been granted bail by Justice Evelyn Anyadike of the Federal High Court in Ilorin. Ahmed was arraigned for his alleged involvement in the diversion of over N10 billion belonging to the state government.
The bail conditions require him to deposit N50 million to the court and produce a surety with landed properties in Ilorin, among other conditions. He will remain in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) until the bail conditions are met.
Ahmed was charged by the EFCC over the alleged diversion of funds during his tenure as governor. The commission alleges that funds belonging to the state were misappropriated and diverted by Ahmed’s government and the administration of former Governor Bukola Saraki, where Ahmed served as Commissioner for Finance.
Abdulfatah Ahmed assumed office as Commissioner for Finance in Kwara State after Saraki became governor in 2003. He also held positions such as treasurer of the Forum of Commissioners of Finance in Nigeria and Chairman of the Budget Formulation Committee and Economic Team of Kwara State.
In the lead-up to the 2011 general elections, Ahmed won the primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and subsequently the Kwara governorship seat. He was re-elected after completing Saraki’s term as governor when Saraki won a senatorial seat.
Ahmed left office in 2019 and was succeeded by the current governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In 2021, EFCC operatives questioned Ahmed at their headquarters in Abuja regarding an alleged diversion of N9 billion from the Kwara State government’s coffers.
