NCDC Confirms Lassa Fever Outbreak in Kaduna State

The Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Dr. Jide Idris, has officially confirmed the outbreak of Lassa fever in Kaduna State. Speaking to reporters in Abuja, Dr. Idris stated that the NCDC is closely monitoring the situation and collaborating with state health authorities to contain the spread of the disease.
Lassa fever is a severe viral hemorrhagic illness transmitted to humans through contact with contaminated food, household items, or infected persons. Symptoms include fever, headache, sore throat, weakness, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pains, chest pain, and in severe cases, unexplained bleeding.
Dr. Idris revealed that the NCDC was notified of suspected cases of viral hemorrhagic fever at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna. Four out of six blood samples tested at the Bayero University Teaching Hospital in Kano confirmed Lassa fever. Twenty-five close contacts are under follow-up and receiving prophylactic medicine.
The NCDC has deployed rapid response teams to conduct epidemiological investigations and implement control measures in affected areas. Dr. Idris emphasized the importance of early detection, prompt treatment, and community engagement to curb the spread of the disease.
He urged healthcare workers and the public to practice strict hygiene, including proper food storage and waste disposal, to reduce transmission risk. Individuals with symptoms should seek medical attention immediately for early diagnosis and treatment.
As of February 18, 2024, 84 local government areas in 23 states have reported 2,621 suspected cases, with 476 confirmed cases and 84 deaths, resulting in a case fatality rate of 18.6%. The NCDC is committed to containing the outbreak and protecting Nigerians’ health, urging vigilance and prompt reporting of suspected cases.
