Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has expressed the readiness of National Assembly members to make adjustments to their salaries as a necessary sacrifice to assist their constituents in coping with the current economic challenges in Nigeria. He noted that parliament had previously made similar sacrifices in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic to alleviate economic hardship.

Speaking on the adoption of the Steven Orosanye report by the federal government to merge some agencies, Kalu emphasized the commitment of the National Assembly to put the nation and their constituents first. He acknowledged that while the salaries and allowances of parliamentarians may not be sufficient for them to effectively perform their duties in their constituencies, they are prepared to make sacrifices for the greater good of the country.

Kalu highlighted the selfless nature of the leadership of the 10th National Assembly, stating that they are willing to make necessary sacrifices. He emphasized that the decisions of the National Assembly are influenced by the pulse of the nation, and if it is determined that adjustments are needed to assist the people, they will act accordingly.

He clarified that the salary of National Assembly members is not as high as perceived, with allowances specifically designated for their constituency work. Kalu assured that allowances are strictly monitored and any misuse results in sanctions.

In conclusion, Kalu reiterated the commitment of the National Assembly to respond to the needs of the people and make adjustments if necessary to support Nigerians in moving forward.
