VP Shettima Urges Responsible Protests Amid Economic Challenges

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has called on Nigerians to express their grievances over the current economic difficulties in a responsible and mature manner. Speaking at the 29th pre-Ramadan lecture organized by the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni, Shettima acknowledged that the government’s economic policies have led to challenges, particularly affecting the poor.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, Shettima also noted that the upcoming Ramadan period would be especially challenging for many Nigerians. The removal of petroleum subsidies and the floating of the naira by the current administration have resulted in hyperinflation and increased food prices, leading to protests across the country.
Despite the hardships, Shettima emphasized that the government has no intention to punish Nigerians. He highlighted the need for difficult reforms, acknowledging that easier alternatives have been considered but deemed insufficient. He reassured citizens that the administration is committed to fixing the country’s economy and improving the lives of Nigerians.
Shettima called for support from Nigerians, urging them to allow space for the government to achieve its goals. He emphasized the importance of criticism and scrutiny in progress, as well as the power of faith and prayer in facing challenges. He concluded by expressing hope that Ramadan would be observed with discipline and that Allah would grant relief from hardship.
The Vice-President’s remarks come amid ongoing protests and criticism over the economic situation in Nigeria, with many expressing frustration over the government’s handling of the economy. His call for responsible protests and mature expressions of grievances reflects a desire to maintain peace and stability while addressing the country’s economic challenges.
