In a shocking turn of events, kidnappers in Kaduna have demanded an exorbitant ransom of N40 trillion, along with 11 Hilux vans and 150 motorcycles, for the release of 16 residents abducted from Gonin-Gora community. The abduction occurred following an attack by bandits on the community, located in the Chikun Local Government area of Kaduna State.

The incident, which took place on Wednesday, 28th February, led to the abduction of 16 residents, prompting outrage and protests from the community. The following day, hundreds of youths blocked the Abuja-Kaduna highway in protest of the attack.

Community leaders have expressed shock and dismay at the astronomical ransom demand, highlighting the impossibility of meeting such a demand. John Yusuf, one of the community leaders, stated, “Even if we sell the entire community, we cannot raise N40 trillion. Even Nigeria as a country has never made a budget of N40 trillion.”

The demand for ransom comes amidst a wave of kidnappings in the area, including the recent abduction of 287 school children at Kuriga, another Chikun community. Yusuf also highlighted the need for increased security measures in the area, including the establishment of a military base to counter the activities of criminals who take advantage of the vast bushes surrounding the community.

While acknowledging the efforts of the military in responding to distress calls, Yusuf noted the challenges of the vast terrain, which allows criminals to evade capture. He pleaded with the government for urgent intervention to establish a military base behind the community to curb the activities of the bandits effectively.

The escalating wave of abductions in Kaduna State underscores the urgent need for comprehensive security measures to protect residents and stem the tide of criminal activities in the region.
