The Benue State government has announced plans to establish its own power plant, aiming to enhance socio-economic development within the state. This initiative, conceived by the Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC), comes after the Federal Government’s recent approval granting state governments the authority to own and manage their electricity companies.
During a meeting with a delegation from Remedy Earth at the BIPC corporate headquarters in Makurdi, the Managing Director of BIPC, Raymond Asemakaha, highlighted the importance of the state owning a power generation plant. He emphasized that access to sufficient power is crucial for stimulating economic activities and transforming the state.
Asemakaha specifically requested Remedy Earth, an electricity company, to establish a pilot plant in Benue State. He explained that this pilot project would serve as a test run to evaluate the company’s capabilities before engaging them further. Asemakaha emphasized the need for tangible results, stating, “Gone are the days that people tell stories, we want to see it before we can recommend them to the governor.”
In response, the Remedy Earth delegation, led by its regional head for Africa, Peace Obichere, assured the BIPC of their readiness to execute the pilot plant project within nine months. Obichere expressed confidence in the company’s manpower and technical expertise, affirming their commitment to pulling resources together to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
The establishment of a power plant in Benue State is expected to have a significant impact on the state’s economy by providing a reliable source of electricity. This initiative aligns with the state government’s goal of promoting industrialization and attracting investments to the state.
The move towards establishing a power plant in Benue State represents a proactive step by the state government to address the critical issue of power supply. By taking control of its electricity generation, the state aims to create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive and stimulate overall economic growth.
Overall, the decision to establish a power plant reflects Benue State’s commitment to harnessing its resources for sustainable development and economic prosperity.
