Minister Laments Nigeria’s Reliance on Imported Technicians, Promises Solutions

The Federal Government is actively addressing the knowledge gap in skilled and certified technicians in Nigeria, according to Chief Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology. He expressed concern over the country’s annual expenditure of billions of dollars on importing technicians from other countries, including neighbouring ECOWAS nations.

During his visit to Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos, Nnaji highlighted the shortage of skilled and certified craftsmen and technicians across various sectors of the economy. He noted that while Nigeria boasts many talented technicians, the lack of international certifications often leads to missed job opportunities, particularly in multinational companies that prefer certified workers.

Nnaji conveyed a message of hope from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, affirming the government’s commitment to resolving Nigeria’s challenges, including unemployment and underemployment. He emphasized the government’s efforts to establish a Tech Ecosystem of international standards to equip Nigerians with the necessary skills for the technology-driven world.

In response, Prince Anthony Nwakaeze, the President of the Computer Village Traders Union, commended the Minister for his commitment to engaging all stakeholders in the tech sector. He expressed appreciation for the government’s efforts to address the skills gap and create opportunities for Nigerian technicians.
