The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and the Niger State Government have launched a collaborative initiative, dubbed “Light Up Niger 2024,” aimed at enhancing electricity supply to residents of Niger State.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago welcomed the initiative, highlighting the state’s significant contribution to Nigeria’s electricity generation through its four hydro dams. He emphasized the crucial role of power supply in the state’s industrialization and expressed confidence that “Light Up Niger” would also address the metering challenges faced by residents.

Governor Bago revealed that the Electricity Act has been enacted in the state, leading to the establishment of the Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission. He expressed readiness to complete the necessary paperwork for the commission, enabling the state to generate and distribute its own power.

AEDC’s Chief Operations Officer, Eng. Chijioke Okwuokenye, described the “Light Up Niger” project as a transformative endeavour, aimed at implementing measures to enhance and sustain electricity supply in Niger State. He commended the Bago administration’s support in supplying transformers to communities, noting the importance of such support for the private sector’s viability.

The recent improvement in power supply in Niger State, following the government’s dissatisfaction with the erratic service, prompted the launch of the “Light Up Niger” initiative. This collaboration between AEDC and the state government is expected to usher in a new era of reliable electricity supply for Nigerlites.
