The Senate is set to summon former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, over alleged infractions in the process of obtaining the N30 trillion Ways and Means loan during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Senate ad hoc committee probing the disbursement and usage of the Ways and Means loan made this known during a meeting with CBN officials. The committee, chaired by Senator Isah Jibrin (Kogi East), accused Emefiele of unilaterally signing billions of naira in approval of different tranches of the loans without following due process.
Bala Bello, one of the deputy governors of the apex bank, led a team of CBN officials to the meeting at the National Assembly, where Senator Jibrin alleged that the committee of governors should have been the signatories to the Ways and Means account, but Emefiele signed billions of naira in about 13 places.
The committee demanded to know the total figure of the Ways and Means loan and the summation of the figure, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in the process.
While commending the bank for the 70 percent implementation of the Anchors Borrowers Programme, the committee insisted on the completion of the remaining 30 percent. Senator Jibrin also stated that Emefiele should provide an explanation to the existing governor, with a warning that he will be summoned if necessary.
Chairman of the Senate committee on Ways and Means, Senator Isah Jubrin, reiterated the committee’s stance, stating that they will not hesitate to invite Emefiele if it becomes absolutely necessary.
