During a recent Town Hall meeting at the old Government Lodge in Enugu, Governor Peter Mbah unveiled an ambitious plan that promises to light up the state by the end of 2026. Addressing residents of Enugu, Governor Mbah revealed the state’s intentions to take a giant leap in solving the perennial problem of inadequate power supply that has hampered both business operations and the daily lives of its inhabitants.

Governor Mbah outlined a comprehensive strategy for achieving this goal, which includes the establishment of the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission. This new body will spearhead the initiative, navigating through the legal and regulatory frameworks necessary to bring the vision to fruition. The governor’s approach taps into the opportunities arising from Nigeria’s power sector reforms, which have shifted electricity to the concurrent legislative list, thereby opening doors for state-level intervention in power generation and distribution.

Highlighting the critical role of electricity in industrial development, Governor Mbah expressed his administration’s commitment to collaborating with the private sector to not only generate but also distribute electricity across Enugu by the targeted 2026 deadline. Plans are in place to construct transmitter lines to manage the distribution network efficiently, ensuring that both businesses and households enjoy a stable power supply.

Simultaneously addressing concerns about tax increases in the state, Governor Mbah clarified that there had been no increase in tax rates under his administration. Instead, efforts have been focused on broadening the tax base to include businesses that had previously evaded taxation. Furthermore, the tax payment system has been digitalised, streamlining the process to eliminate previous bottlenecks and improve the overall efficiency of tax collection in the state.

As Enugu State embarks on this ambitious journey towards self-sufficiency in electricity supply, the administration’s plans have certainly sparked interest and dialogue among its residents. The success of these initiatives could potentially set a precedent for other states, marking a significant step forward in Nigeria’s quest for improved infrastructure and economic development.
