Nigerians Plunge into Darkness Again as National Grid Collapses

Nigeria is facing another bout of power outage as the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) announced a national grid collapse on Thursday. The collapse, which occurred at approximately 4:28 pm, has left customers across the country in darkness.

The AEDC informed its customers of the situation through its social media platforms, stating, “Dear valued customers, please be informed that the current power outage is due to a system failure from the national grid. The system collapsed at about 16:28 hours today, 28 March 2024, causing the outage currently being experienced across our franchise area. We appeal for your understanding as all stakeholders are working hard to restore normal supply.”

Similarly, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company also issued a public notice, informing its customers of the system collapse at 16:28 hours and the resulting loss of power supply across its network. The company assured customers that it is working with its partners to restore the grid as quickly as possible.

This recent grid collapse adds to a series of similar incidents in the country. In February, Nigerians experienced a nationwide blackout as the national power grid, managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), collapsed. The TCN reported a total of 46 grid collapses between 2017 and 2022, indicating a recurring issue in the country’s power sector.

The frequency of grid collapses highlights the challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector, including inadequate infrastructure and maintenance issues. The government and stakeholders are under increasing pressure to address these challenges and provide stable electricity supply to the populace.
