Northerners Who Kept Mute During Buhari’s Eight Years Have Found Their Voices Under Tinubu’s Administration – Matawalle Camp
In a recent exchange between Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and northern political leader Kabiru Garba Marafa, Matawalle criticized Marafa for his remarks regarding the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) statement on President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Matawalle’s spokesperson, Deyemi Saka, pointed out the hypocrisy of those who remained silent during former President Buhari’s tenure but are now vocal because Tinubu is not from the north.

Saka, in defense of Matawalle, emphasized that criticizing the northern elders is justified considering their lack of action during Buhari’s presidency. Saka highlighted the need for honesty and truthfulness in political discourse, dismissing Marafa’s criticisms as a mere attempt to boost his image and personal agenda. Saka also mentioned the cultural practice of respecting elders but stressed the importance of speaking truth regardless of the consequences.
Furthermore, Saka accused Marafa of contributing to the underdevelopment of the region by prioritizing personal ambition over the interests of the people, referring to Marafa’s actions during the 2019 governorship elections in Zamfara State. Saka concluded by denouncing Marafa’s criticisms as mere political theatrics and urged observers not to take them seriously.
Overall, the exchange reflects tensions within northern political circles regarding the support for Tinubu’s administration and highlights the complexities of regional politics in Nigeria.
