Bobrisky, the well-known crossdresser and socialite, has taken legal action by filing a Notice of Appeal to contest his conviction on a four-count charge related to the mishandling of Naira notes. His lawyer, Bimbo Kusanu, submitted the appeal to the Court of Appeal, seeking to overturn the six-month imprisonment sentence imposed on Bobrisky. Instead, they propose substituting the sentence with a fine of N50,000 for each count.

The initial ruling came from a Federal High Court in Lagos, which sentenced Bobrisky to six months in prison without the option of a fine for the offense of Naira abuse. The case stemmed from Bobrisky’s arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Lagos. The EFCC clarified that the arrest was specifically related to the mutilation of Naira notes, not Bobrisky’s lifestyle as a cross-dresser.

Meanwhile, another prominent figure, Pascal Okechukwu, widely known as Cubana Chief Priest, faced a similar charge before the Federal High Court in Lagos. He was accused of tampering with and abusing the Naira. However, Cubana Chief Priest pleaded not guilty, and the court granted him bail set at N10 million with two sureties in like sum.

In essence, both Bobrisky and Cubana Chief Priest have been embroiled in legal proceedings concerning their alleged mishandling of Naira notes. While Bobrisky seeks to appeal his conviction and replace it with a monetary penalty, Cubana Chief Priest has denied the allegations and is currently out on bail.

The cases underscore the seriousness with which Nigerian authorities address offenses related to the integrity of the national currency. Mutilating or abusing the Naira is considered a punishable offense, as demonstrated by the legal actions taken against individuals like Bobrisky and Cubana Chief Priest.

Bobrisky’s decision to pursue an appeal indicates a desire to challenge the severity of the initial sentencing. By opting for a monetary fine instead of imprisonment, Bobrisky’s legal team aims to mitigate the consequences of the conviction.

Overall, these legal proceedings highlight the intersection of law, finance, and social status in Nigeria’s legal system. The outcomes of these cases will not only affect the individuals involved but also set precedents for how similar offenses are handled in the future.
