Submit Yourself To EFCC; Several Ex-Governors Have Been Invited – Civil Society Tells Yahaya Bello

The civil society group, New Face of Nigeria, has urged former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to present himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to face corruption charges. They emphasized that no one is exempt from the law, implying that Bello’s evasion won’t shield him forever. The group’s convener, Omokehinde Agbedina, stressed the principle of equity, suggesting that avoiding the EFCC implies guilt.

Agbedina highlighted the precedent of other ex-governors cooperating with the EFCC and questioned why Bello would evade investigation. He criticized Bello’s successor, Governor Ododo Ahmed Usman, for allegedly shielding him from arrest, which he deemed a violation of Nigeria’s constitution.

The group called on Bello to demonstrate integrity by cooperating with the EFCC, asserting that no court can prevent the agency from performing its duties. Agbedina condemned any attempts to obstruct the EFCC’s investigations, especially by public officials who should uphold the law.

Agbedina argued against using legal means to evade accountability, emphasizing the importance of respecting law enforcement agencies’ authority. He warned against actions that could tarnish Nigeria’s reputation internationally.

Furthermore, Agbedina dismissed the idea that a court could prevent the EFCC from prosecuting Bello for allegedly embezzling N80 billion from the state treasury.

Overall, the group demands accountability from Bello, urging him to cooperate with the EFCC and face the allegations against him. They stress the importance of upholding the rule of law and condemn any attempts to evade justice.
