Nigerian Government Vows To Fish Out, Dismiss Workers In Public, Private Organisation Using Fake Certificates
The Nigerian government has pledged to eradicate the presence of employees with counterfeit certificates from both public and private sectors. Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, affirmed this commitment on Friday in Abuja while receiving the report of an inter-ministerial investigative committee chaired by Prof. Jubrila Amin on degree certificate milling.

Expressing concern, Mamman acknowledged the possibility of individuals holding fake certificates within various organizations, stressing the necessity to eliminate such instances to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s education system. He emphasized the need for decisive measures to restore standards, expressing determination to sanitize the education sector and maintain national standards.
Committee Chairman, Prof. Amin, presenting the report, highlighted the alarming quality of education in the investigated schools, particularly concerning the issuance of degree certificates. He advocated for the digitalization and automation of education systems across agencies, advocating for enhanced accreditation processes and the establishment of more universities to meet the demand for authentic qualifications.
Prof. Amin underscored the importance of preventing the proliferation of unaccredited programs and institutions, urging the National Universities Commission (NUC) to pay closer attention to part-time and sandwich programs to prevent the recurrence of previous accreditation issues. He emphasized the need for rigorous scrutiny of certificates obtained from certain foreign institutions known for issuing fake degrees.
The committee’s investigation was initiated following allegations of degrees racketeering within both local and foreign private universities. Its mandate included reviewing the roles of government agencies in facilitating the recognition and procurement of potentially counterfeit certificates.
In conclusion, the Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Education, is committed to rooting out the presence of individuals with fraudulent certificates in public and private organizations. This effort is part of broader initiatives to enhance the integrity and standards of the country’s education system, as highlighted by the recommendations of the investigative committee chaired by Prof. Jubrila Amin.
