A coalition of civil society groups has launched a global campaign protesting against the practice of awarding pipeline protection contracts to ex-militants in Nigeria. They argue that engaging former militants in oil-related activities contributes to the country’s ongoing fuel crisis. The coalition, known as the Civil Society Coalition for Mandate Protection (CSC-MAP), contends that such contracts empower individuals with histories of violence, terrorism, and rebellion, which in turn perpetuates insecurity and exacerbates the proliferation of arms in the country.

The group emphasizes the need to draw attention from various stakeholders, including the Presidency, OPEC, ECOWAS, and the United Nations Security Council, to address the issue. They believe that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must intervene to halt the trend of awarding contracts to individuals associated with violence and banditry. Through rallies and protests, the coalition aims to raise awareness and mobilize support to end the practice.

Mr. Popoola Ajayi, the General Secretary of CSC-MAP, highlights the urgency of the campaign, stressing that peace and stability are essential for Nigeria’s democratic progress and socio-economic development. He emphasizes the need to dismantle the infrastructure that fuels terrorism and arms proliferation, asserting that it poses a significant threat to democracy and national security.

The coalition plans to extend its campaign beyond Lagos, with rallies scheduled in major cities such as Ibadan, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Abuja, as well as at the ECOWAS headquarters. These events aim to engage a wider audience and garner support for their cause. Additionally, they intend to distribute pamphlets and T-shirts to raise awareness and encourage participation in the movement.

By advocating for the cessation of pipeline protection contracts to individuals with violent backgrounds, the coalition seeks to address the root causes of insecurity and fuel scarcity in Nigeria. They argue that by disrupting the cycle of violence and arms proliferation, they can contribute to the establishment of a peaceful and prosperous nation. Through their collective efforts, they aim to promote democratic values and ensure sustainable livelihoods for all Nigerians.
