Nigerian Senator Okpebholo Caught On Camera ‘Spraying’ Naira Notes At Event; Coalition Petitions EFCC Over Abuse

Senator Monday Okpebholo, who represents Edo Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly and was the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, faces scrutiny from a coalition of civil society groups. The Network of Civil Society Organizations in Nigeria has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate Senator Okpebholo after a video surfaced allegedly showing him ‘spraying’ naira notes at a public event.

The coalition, led by National Coordinator Comrade Victor Kalu and National Secretary Alh. Ali Abatca, submitted the petition to EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede on May 2, 2024. They argue that Senator Okpebholo’s actions constitute abuse and mutilation of the naira, a violation of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act of 2007, which deems such behavior punishable.

The groups expressed disappointment that public figures, including lawmakers, have flouted the law by engaging in actions that degrade the national currency. They demand swift action from the EFCC to arrest and prosecute all individuals caught on video abusing the naira, emphasizing that no one is exempt from accountability under the law.

In their petition, the coalition specifically calls for an investigation into the video involving Senator Okpebholo, stressing the need for him to be held accountable as a representative of the people. They warn of potential consequences if the EFCC fails to act decisively, including peaceful protests and legal action against the agency for negligence.

The petitioners reference recent cases, such as that of popular crossdresser Bobrisky, who was sentenced to six months in jail for naira abuse, and businessman Cubana Chief Priest, who faced similar charges. These cases serve as precedents for the seriousness with which the judiciary views offenses related to the defacement of the national currency.

Senator Okpebholo’s alleged actions have sparked public outrage and raised concerns about the integrity of public officials. The coalition’s demand for accountability underscores the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that those entrusted with public office are held to the highest standards of conduct.

As the EFCC considers the petition, all eyes are on the agency to demonstrate its commitment to justice and the rule of law by thoroughly investigating the allegations against Senator Okpebholo and taking appropriate legal action if warranted.
