Terrorists, commonly referred to as bandits, have perpetrated a mass abduction of over 500 individuals and displaced 50 villages in Zamfara State, situated in the North-West region of Nigeria. The violent attack, which occurred on Monday, also resulted in the tragic deaths of five people, including two police officers, as reported by Bello Hassan Shinkafi, a Member of the House of Representatives representing the Zurmi/Shinkafi Federal Constituency. Shinkafi lamented the ongoing insecurity, stating that the bandits operate with impunity, carrying out attacks regardless of the time of day or night. Survivors of these attacks have been forced to flee to safer areas, seeking refuge from the incessant violence.

The lawmaker highlighted the urgent need for a strategic overhaul to effectively combat the banditry crisis plaguing the Northwest states of Nigeria. He emphasized the inadequate manpower and the prolonged deployment of military personnel in the region, calling for the rotation of troops to prevent fatigue and inefficiency. Shinkafi commended the efforts of the Zamfara State Government in negotiating the release of 200 abductees, expressing hope for the safe return of the remaining captives.

Despite attempts to obtain confirmation from the police regarding the incidents, authorities could not be reached for comment. The spokesperson for the police in the state, ASP Yazid Abubakar, was unavailable, and calls to the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Shehu Dalije, went unanswered. The absence of official response underscores the challenges faced in addressing the security crisis and underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts to restore peace and security in the affected areas.
