Education Group, ERC Vows To Sustain Protests Against Fee Hike At University Of Ibadan

The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) is steadfast in its commitment to opposing the escalation of university fees and is advocating for peaceful mass actions by Nigerian students. This comes in response to the recent arrest of four student activists, including Femi Adeyeye, by the University of Ibadan’s security team during a protest against the tuition fee hike. The activists were subsequently handed over to Operation Burst soldiers in Oyo State after being subjected to physical assault by the university security personnel.

Despite the subsequent release of the student activists, the ERC, UI branch, has vehemently condemned their arrest, deeming it unlawful and a direct infringement on their fundamental rights to freedom of expression. The ERC maintains its resolute position against the fee hike, denouncing it as an assault on students’ right to education. They are calling on the newly elected students’ union leadership to convene a congress to democratically decide on organizing a series of mass resistance movements against any proposed fee increment.

Furthermore, the ERC commends the courage demonstrated by the arrested student activists and their unwavering determination to continue advocating against the fee hike despite facing harassment and arrest. They also express appreciation for the prompt intervention of legal and activist allies, which led to the swift and unconditional release of the activists. In reaffirming their solidarity with students, the ERC pledges to continue supporting efforts to oppose any form of fee increment and to advocate for improved learning and living conditions within the university.

The ERC’s unwavering stance underscores the ongoing struggle to combat the rising cost of education and underscores the importance of safeguarding students’ rights to affordable and accessible education. Despite facing challenges and setbacks, student activists remain resolute in their pursuit of equitable and quality education for all.
