Nigerian Police Arrest Adamawa Woman For Burning Stepdaughters With Fire After ‘Eating Food Without Permission’

Rachel Geoffrey, a woman residing in the Federal Housing Estate in Adamawa State, allegedly subjected her two stepdaughters, aged three and seven, to severe burns on their hands for eating food without her permission. The incident occurred on May 14, 2024, and was reported by witnesses in the area.

According to reports, the stepmother left the children without food for several hours. Upon her return from running errands, she discovered that the seven-year-old had eaten the food reserved for their father, prompting her to tie up the hands of both children and set them on fire in a fit of anger.

The police spokesperson for the state confirmed the incident, stating that Rachel Geoffrey, aged 23, was in custody. He explained that the children had been subjected to various acts of cruelty and human rights violations by their stepmother following the separation of their parents. The most recent incident occurred when the children, who were hungry, ate their father’s food, which enraged the stepmother.

The stepmother then tied the children’s hands with a handkerchief, rendering them powerless, and proceeded to inflict severe burns on their hands. The Commissioner of Police expressed concern over the incident and urged parents to fulfill their responsibilities towards their children. He assured the public of the diligent prosecution of the suspect.

This distressing incident highlights the importance of safeguarding the rights and well-being of children, as well as the need for parents and caregivers to exercise restraint and provide adequate care and support.
