Kenneth Okonkwo, formerly a spokesperson for Peter Obi’s Labour Party (LP) presidential campaign council, has severed ties with the Labour Party’s National Working Committee (NWC) led by Julius Abure. Okonkwo, known for his roles in Nollywood, criticized the recent National Convention organized by Abure’s leadership, labeling it as criminal and corrupt.

Expressing his discontent on his social media account, Okonkwo declared his suspension of all associations with the Abure-led NWC, emphasizing his commitment to integrity and ethical conduct in Nigerian politics. He denounced the convention’s organization under Abure, highlighting his decision to depart the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) due to perceived incompetence and dishonesty, only to encounter similar shortcomings in the Labour Party.

Earlier in April, SaharaReporters had reported on demands from the Labour Veterans and Trade Unionists’ Assembly for the resignation of Abure and Joe Ajaero, the President of Nigeria Labour Congress, over alleged party scandals. The assembly called for an immediate investigation into the party’s finances under Abure’s leadership, describing the situation as a violation of democratic principles.

Comrade Isah Tijjani, speaking on behalf of the assembly, criticized Abure’s unilateral decisions and disregard for the Labour Party’s constitution. The group expressed concerns over what they perceived as a power-drunk leadership and emphasized the need for transparency and adherence to democratic norms within the party.

Okonkwo’s departure from the Labour Party underscores growing dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership and highlights broader concerns about integrity and accountability in Nigerian politics. The demand for leadership accountability within the Labour Party reflects ongoing challenges within Nigeria’s political landscape and the imperative for ethical governance and transparency.
