Secretary To Government, Akume Says Climate Change Is Major Reason For Insecurity In Nigeria

George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), emphasized the critical role of climate change in Nigeria’s security challenges during the launch of Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contribution Implementation Framework (NDC-IF) (2023-2030) in Abuja. He stated that ecological factors, exacerbated by climate change, significantly contribute to the country’s insecurity. Akume highlighted the importance of addressing climate change seriously, citing the NDC-IF document as a crucial tool for combating climate change in Nigeria.
The SGF stressed the need for effective implementation of the NDC to mobilize resources and mitigate climate change’s adverse effects. He emphasized that urgent action is necessary to limit global warming, as indicated by recent reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Akume emphasized that climate change impacts not only the environment but also threatens the socio-economic stability of communities worldwide.
The NDC-IF serves as a roadmap for transformative action, outlining strategies, policies, and measures to reduce greenhouse emissions, enhance resilience, and promote sustainable development. The Minister of Environment, Malam Balarabe Lawal, echoed Akume’s sentiments, highlighting the NDC-IF’s importance in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development. Lawal emphasized the need for unwavering dedication and partnership among stakeholders to achieve green growth and resilience.
Former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Climate Change, Mr. Samuel Onuigbo, commended the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) for launching the NDC implementation framework. He urged the implementation of every aspect of the project. The Director General of the NCCC, Salisu Dahiru, emphasized the importance of stakeholder engagement and awareness-building in promoting climate change governance in Nigeria.
Overall, the launch of the NDC-IF underscores Nigeria’s commitment to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development. The framework provides a comprehensive strategy for mitigating climate change’s adverse effects and fostering resilience in the face of environmental challenges. It also highlights the importance of collaboration among stakeholders and the need for concerted efforts to achieve climate goals and ensure a sustainable future for Nigeria.
