Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has instructed the Nigeria Police Force to arrest former Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, accusing him of inciting tension by attempting to forcibly return to the palace after his dethronement. The directive was conveyed by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. Bayero allegedly entered Kano city clandestinely with intentions to reclaim his position, prompting the governor’s intervention to maintain public peace.

The governor’s action follows the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, which was officially approved on Thursday. This decision was made after the state assembly passed a bill dissolving the creation of additional emirates, a move initiated in 2019 by the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. The bill, titled “The Kano State Emirates Councils (Repeal) Bill, 2024,” reversed the creation of emirates such as Rano, Karaye, Gaya, and Bichi, restoring the original Kano Emirate system.

Governor Yusuf’s victory in the recent election reignited calls for Sanusi’s reinstatement, as he had promised during his campaign to restore the traditional emirate system. Sanusi’s return to power marks the culmination of a series of events triggered by the rift between him and former Governor Ganduje, which led to his initial deposition.

The governor’s directive to arrest Bayero underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order in the state and ensuring a smooth transition within the traditional leadership structure. It also reflects the ongoing power struggle and political dynamics within Kano’s emirate system.

As the situation unfolds, it highlights the complexities of governance, traditional authority, and political maneuvering in Nigeria’s northern region. The actions of the governor and the former emir reverberate not only within the state but also across the country, underscoring the significance of traditional institutions and their role in the country’s socio-political landscape.
