May 29: Tinubu Presidency Dissociates Self From Aide’s Statement, Says Information Claiming President Will Address National Assembly Joint Session Is False

The Presidency has distanced itself from a statement issued by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, announcing that President Bola Tinubu would address a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday. Onanuga clarified that Tinubu would not address the nation on his first-year anniversary as Nigeria’s leader, but instead, the President would address the National Assembly to commemorate 25 years of Nigeria’s democratic journey. The speech would highlight the achievements of Tinubu’s administration and Nigeria’s democracy since 1999. Former Senate President David Mark, former Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila, and former military ruler General Abdulsalami Abubakar were also scheduled to speak. Additionally, Tinubu would commission the National Assembly Library and Resource Center, renamed as the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Building. However, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, later clarified that the Office of the President was not involved in planning the event and therefore, Tinubu’s address to the National Assembly was false and unauthorized. Ngelale reiterated Tinubu’s commitment to inaugurating strategic projects across the country for the benefit of all Nigerians.
