Nigeria Police Stray Bullet Kills Two Persons In Ekiti While ‘Attempting To Retrieve Vehicle For Motorist Who Fled After Hitting Motorbike Rider’

Two individuals tragically lost their lives in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, due to a police stray bullet incident. The shooting occurred in the Cele area, near Omisanjana, on Tuesday night. Among the victims was Taiwo, a married man with children who attended technical college in Ado-Ekiti.
The incident unfolded as a response to a motor vehicle accident involving a Lexus car and a Jincheng motorcycle. After colliding with the motorbike and injuring several individuals, the occupants of the car sought assistance from the AKS Anti-Kidnapping Squad to retrieve their vehicle from the accident scene. Rather than attending to the injured victims, they prioritized recovering their car, fearing obstruction from witnesses.
Eyewitnesses recounted how community members expressed outrage at the lack of concern shown by the car occupants towards the injured individuals. As tensions escalated, the police intervened, but their efforts were met with resistance. In the ensuing chaos, a police officer accidentally discharged a firearm, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.
The Ekiti State Police Command provided a different account of the incident, attributing the shooting to an accidental discharge by one of its officers amidst efforts to maintain order at the accident scene. The officer responsible for the shooting has been apprehended and will face disciplinary action.
Despite the conflicting narratives, the loss of lives underscores the need for thorough investigations and accountability. The incident has prompted assurances from the police command of a comprehensive inquiry to ascertain the facts and ensure justice for the victims’ families.
While the tragedy has sparked public outcry, it also highlights broader concerns regarding police conduct and response protocols in handling critical situations. Efforts to address these issues are crucial in fostering trust between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.
