Cases Of High Blood Pressure Rising Among Nigerians, Civic Group Asks Tinubu To Be Responsive In Second Year

The New Nigerian Voice, a civic organization, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office, labeling it as a period of hardship and distress for Nigerians. In a statement released by its Executive Secretary, Omokehinde Agbedina, the group urged President Tinubu to be more responsive to the challenges faced by Nigerians.
The group expressed dismay at the worsening conditions experienced by citizens, particularly in the wake of policy decisions such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the fluctuation of the exchange rate. They called on President Tinubu to reconsider these decisions with a focus on safeguarding the welfare of the people, emphasizing the principles of progressive politics.
Highlighting the economic struggles faced by Nigerians across various sectors, the group noted the sharp rise in food prices following the removal of fuel subsidies in May 2023. Despite President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency on food insecurity, the cost of living has continued to soar, pushing essential items out of reach for many.
Citing data from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, the New Nigerian Voice pointed out that basic necessities like sachet water, noodles, and ‘garri’ have become more expensive while providing less quantity. They also highlighted the housing crisis, with landlords using force to evict tenants unable to afford skyrocketing rents, particularly in Lagos.
The healthcare sector has not been spared from the hardships, as the cost of medication and treatment has risen to the point where many Nigerians, including those with relatively high incomes, can no longer afford essential healthcare services. Hospitals are struggling to cope with unpaid bills, leading to neglect of patients who cannot afford treatment.
The group warned of the potential health consequences of the ongoing hardships, predicting a rise in cases of high blood pressure and stress-related illnesses. They also expressed concern about the growing trend of suicide among Nigerians seeking to escape their dire circumstances.
In conclusion, the New Nigerian Voice called on President Tinubu to take urgent action to address the pressing issues affecting Nigerians’ livelihoods. They emphasized the need for responsive governance that prioritizes the welfare of the people and urged the government to implement policies that alleviate the suffering of the population.
