Nationwide Blackout Looms As Electricity Workers Mobilise For Monday’s NLC Strike

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) is set to join the nationwide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) beginning on Monday, June 3, 2024. This decision follows the government’s failure to enact a new National Minimum Wage Act and reverse the recent increase in electricity tariffs. The strike aims to address these issues and ensure fair wages for Nigerian workers. Labour unions have instructed their members to fully participate in the strike to emphasize the demand for a living wage. The NUEE has directed its members to comply with the strike directive, expressing concerns about the government’s handling of wage negotiations and its impact on the working population. The strike is also motivated by dissatisfaction with government policies that have contributed to the economic hardships faced by workers. Mobilization efforts are underway to ensure widespread participation in the strike, with union leaders at various levels urged to facilitate compliance. The strike action will commence on Sunday, June 2, at midnight. This development reflects ongoing nationwide protests over socio-economic issues in Nigeria.
