Stay Firm And Undaunted, Sowore Tells Nigerian Labour Leaders After Soldiers Caused Panic At Meeting Venue With Government

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has urged Nigerian labor leaders to remain courageous amidst reports of soldiers surrounding the venue of their meeting with the government. Sowore, a former presidential candidate, emphasized the importance of not being intimidated by such tactics and encouraged the leaders to stay focused on their mission of securing fair wages for Nigerian workers.
Sowore’s message of support came in response to reports that soldiers were present at the meeting venue, which raised concerns about potential interference. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) had alerted on social media about the presence of soldiers, heightening tensions.
However, Sowore reassured the labor leaders that such intimidation tactics were common and should not deter them from fulfilling their duties in advocating for workers’ rights. He emphasized the need to remain resolute in the face of adversity, echoing the sentiment of solidarity with the labor movement.
Subsequently, the Nigerian Army clarified that the soldiers were merely escorts of the National Security Adviser and were not deployed to disrupt the meeting. Despite this clarification, the incident added to the already heightened atmosphere as organized labor commenced an indefinite nationwide strike.
The strike, initiated by various labor unions including the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), led to the shutdown of the national grid, plunging the country into darkness. Federal and state government offices, as well as other sectors such as aviation and judiciary, were affected by the strike, demonstrating widespread support and compliance.
Sowore’s words of encouragement amidst the tense situation underscored the importance of solidarity and resilience in the face of challenges. His message aimed to bolster the resolve of labor leaders and workers alike, emphasizing the significance of their fight for fair wages and better working conditions.
Overall, Sowore’s intervention served as a rallying call for unity and determination in the pursuit of justice and equality for Nigerian workers.
