Saudi Arabia Declares June 16 as Eid al-Adha Day Following Crescent Sighting

Saudi Arabian authorities have officially announced June 16, 2024, as the date for celebrating Eid al-Adha (known as Sallah). This decision came after the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah crescent, marking the beginning of the 12th Islamic month. As a result, the holy month commenced on Friday, June 7, and the Hajj pilgrimage for the year 1445 AH-2024 will start on Friday, June 14, with the day of Arafah falling on Saturday, June 15.

Eid al-Adha, the significant Islamic festival, will be observed on Sunday, June 16, 2024. This celebration typically involves the sacrificial killing of rams, symbolizing an act of sacrifice. Preceding the festival is Arafat Day, scheduled for June 15.

The Saudi Supreme Court had previously urged all Muslims across the Kingdom to participate in the sighting of the crescent moon of the Arabic month Dhu Al Hijjah, aiming to determine the start of the new month and the festival day according to the Islamic calendar.

Eid al-Adha is celebrated globally by Muslims on the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

This announcement carries significant importance for Muslims worldwide, as it marks the beginning of a sacred period and the observance of one of Islam’s most important festivals. It also underscores the traditional practices and rituals associated with Eid al-Adha, emphasizing the importance of faith and sacrifice in Islamic culture.
