Tinubu Government Says NLC’s Shutting Of National Grid During Strike Is Treasonable, Laments Loss Of Revenue

Tinubu Administration Labels NLC’s National Grid Shutdown as Treasonable Act, Bemoans Revenue Loss
The Nigerian government, under President Bola Tinubu, has condemned the shutdown of the national grid by members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), categorizing it as treasonable felony. George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), delivered this stance during an address to the National Executive Council of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Abuja.
Akume expressed concern over the financial losses incurred by the Nigerian government due to the actions of the organized labor, while reaffirming President Tinubu’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of Nigerians. The shutdown of the national grid by labor unions during the nationwide strike for a new minimum wage also raised alarm in the Senate.
In response to criticisms, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, defended the shutdown, citing alleged attacks on labor union members by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The TCN had announced the complete halt of Nigeria’s power grid as the strike unfolded. The strike itself, led by the NLC and TUC, was a protest against the Federal Government’s proposed N60,000 minimum wage.
This development underscores the tension between labor unions and the government regarding wage negotiations and industrial actions. It highlights the economic repercussions of such strikes, including revenue loss and disruptions to essential services like electricity supply. The government’s characterization of the grid shutdown as treasonable illustrates the seriousness with which it views labor unrest and its determination to maintain control over key infrastructure.
As stakeholders continue to navigate the complexities of labor relations, finding a balance between workers’ rights and national interests remains a crucial challenge. Effective dialogue and negotiation mechanisms are essential to resolving disputes and addressing the underlying grievances of workers while ensuring the stability and prosperity of the nation.
