Protesters gathered outside the Nigeria High Commission in London to demand a thorough investigation into the death of Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, a Nigerian musician. Mohbad, aged 27 and formerly signed to Naira Marley’s record label, Marlian Music, passed away on September 12 under controversial circumstances, prompting widespread outcry and calls for justice.
The demonstrators, carrying placards and banners, voiced their dissatisfaction with the delayed and inconclusive autopsy results. They specifically urged authorities to investigate individuals who were reportedly with Mohbad at the time of his death.
Following his demise, the Lagos State Police Command formed a special investigation team on September 18, 2023, comprising 13 members to probe the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s passing. This investigation resulted in the arrest of several individuals, including Naira Marley and Balogun Eletu (known as Sam Larry).
To ascertain the cause of Mohbad’s death, his body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an autopsy. However, the results were initially inconclusive due to the body’s decomposition, as reported by the Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, in September 2023. Subsequently, a toxicology test was conducted to determine the cause of death, with the Lagos State Government stating it was processed at NMS Labs in Pennsylvania, USA. However, the US-based laboratory denied performing the test, adding confusion to the investigation.
In May, a pathologist testified in the Coroner’s Court that due to the body’s state, the autopsy could not definitively determine how Mohbad died. This revelation underscored the challenges faced in establishing clarity surrounding the musician’s tragic demise.
The protest in London reflects ongoing frustrations over perceived delays and discrepancies in the investigation, as well as concerns over the transparency and thoroughness of the process. It underscores the public’s demand for accountability and justice in cases of suspicious deaths, especially involving prominent figures like Mohbad.
The call for a comprehensive probe into Mohbad’s death resonates with broader societal concerns regarding transparency in law enforcement investigations and the handling of high-profile cases. As the investigation continues to unfold, stakeholders and the public alike await further developments and clarity on the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s untimely death.
In summary, the protest at the Nigeria High Commission in London signifies a push for transparency and accountability in the investigation of Mohbad’s death. It highlights public dissatisfaction with the handling of the case and emphasizes the importance of thoroughness and clarity in determining the truth behind his tragic passing
