Nigeria Has Implemented APIS Technology Providing Details, Information On Incoming Travellers, Says Minister

Nigeria has recently implemented the Advance Passenger Information System (APIS), a significant step aimed at enhancing border security by providing immigration officers with detailed information about incoming travelers. This development aligns with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), as highlighted by Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior. During a meeting with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, in Abuja, the minister announced this milestone, emphasizing its pivotal role in securing Nigeria’s borders more effectively.Dr. Tunji-Ojo expressed satisfaction with the completion of this project, which had been underway since 2003, underscoring its potential to bolster national security efforts. The APIS implementation allows the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to screen travelers objectively by leveraging connectivity with Interpol’s database, enabling real-time queries and ensuring comprehensive background checks prior to entry into Nigeria.Highlighting further advancements, the minister noted that Nigeria has installed state-of-the-art E-gates at its international airports, operating at UK standards. These E-gates are capable of processing individuals within 24 seconds, reflecting Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging international best practices in border management. Dr. Tunji-Ojo also outlined plans to enhance infrastructure support for the NIS, including the construction of a solar power facility capable of providing 1 Mega Watt, ensuring uninterrupted operations of critical border security equipment.Beyond border control, the minister emphasized the government’s substantial investments in the Federal Fire Service, particularly in upgrading the Fire Academy in Abuja to meet global standards. Drawing inspiration from the United Kingdom’s exemplary fire and emergency response systems, Dr. Tunji-Ojo underscored the importance of aligning Nigeria’s capabilities with international benchmarks to enhance national resilience and ensure effective emergency management. In response, British High Commissioner Montgomery commended Nigeria’s progress in modernizing its passport systems and expressed readiness for further collaboration to improve efficiency in Nigeria’s fire and emergency response systems. Discussions also encompassed capacity building and the National Resilience Programme, highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s overall readiness to handle emergencies and crises effectively. The implementation of APIS marks a significant stride towards enhancing Nigeria’s border security and operational efficiency, underpinned by international standards and collaborative partnerships aimed at safeguarding national interests and promoting global connectivity.
