Akinrinlola Olumide, a media practitioner, has called upon the administration of President Bola Tinubu to address the issue of brutality and unprofessional conduct exhibited by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). His appeal comes in response to recent incidents involving EFCC personnel assaulting guests and employees at the Regional Hotel in Ojo, Lagos State.Footage surfaced showing EFCC operatives forcefully entering hotel rooms and physically assaulting individuals, including a female staff member who was slapped repeatedly while wearing nightwear. The operatives, unaware of the CCTV in the room, proceeded to ransack the premises, sparking widespread concern over their use of excessive force.Olumide’s statement, issued on Friday, condemns the EFCC’s actions as reminiscent of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), notorious for their unprofessional conduct and extrajudicial killings during operations targeting internet fraudsters. He cited personal experiences, including the tragic loss of a friend in Ibadan due to SARS gunfire in 2019.He highlighted another recent incident in Akure, Ondo State, where EFCC operatives reportedly assaulted numerous individuals, including a newlywed couple, resulting in injuries. Olumide urged immediate intervention to halt what he described as “shenanigans” and “evil” before further casualties occur at the hands of these officers. The media practitioner’s appeal underscores growing public outrage over the EFCC’s methods, calling for accountability and government oversight to prevent escalation of brutality and protect the rights of Nigerians.
