Police Inspector-General Egbetokun Is NSA’s Puppet, Not Concerned About Escalating Insecurity In Nigeria – Francis Nwapa
Human rights activist Francis Nwapa has criticized Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun for his handling of security issues in Nigeria. Nwapa accused Egbetokun of being a puppet of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, citing the recent questioning of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero as evidence of this claim.Nwapa’s criticism comes after reports that Egbetokun invited Ajaero to the police headquarters to discuss his residence on the outskirts of Abuja. The police questioned Ajaero about why he lived in a less affluent area, despite his financial means to reside in more central locations. This questioning was seen by Nwapa as a diversion from addressing the real issue of escalating insecurity in the country.During the meeting, Ajaero’s legal team, led by Femi Falana (SAN), challenged the police’s basis for suspicion. They argued that living in a less affluent area is not a crime and questioned the relevance of such an inquiry. The police’s allegations, including claims about foreign funding and links to terrorism, lacked concrete evidence, and Falana’s team demanded clarity on whether sponsoring protests was illegal.Nwapa condemned Egbetokun’s focus on Ajaero’s residence instead of addressing the broader security issues in Nigeria. He argued that this reflects a lack of concern for the serious problems facing the country, including violent crimes and the detention of protesters. Nwapa called for the immediate release of detained protesters and criticized Egbetokun for not focusing on more pressing security matters, such as locating bandits and addressing the deaths of protesters during the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests. In summary, Nwapa’s remarks highlight dissatisfaction with the police leadership’s priorities and call for more effective action on pressing security issues in Nigeria.
